Project: M7 solar PV implementation and support

Date: February 2018

NorthWestern Roads manages the Westlink M7 connecting road on Sydney’s orbital motorway network. Opened to traffic in December 2015, the M7 motorway links the M5 at Prestons (in the South) with the M4 (Eastern Creek) and the M2 (West Baulkham Hills in the North).

In 2017, NorthWestern Roads sought to install a solar PV system on the roof of their major control centre in Eastern as part of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Energetics was engaged to provided technical and commercial advice on the system size and support a tender for the PV system, as well as measurement and verification support post implementation, to ensure the return on investment was achieved.

Approach

To help NorthWestern Roads size, procure and implement a 50kW solar PV system on their head office, we began with an analysis of the control centre’s electrical load data (half hourly intervals), financial levers and technical data to produce a tender specification.

After an initial analysis we invited the market to provide fixed price proposals for the installation, assessed the proposals from a financial and technical perspective and advised NorthWestern Roads on a preferred provider.

The successful installer was Epho which proceeded to install 182 Trina panels with Fronius inverters on Schletter mounting structures over a three month period.  The installation was completed in November 2018.

Energetics undertook a site assessment to ensure that installation was in line with tender documentation and was on schedule. Following commissioning we undertook three months of measurement and verification to check that the system was performing correctly.

“Energetics worked with Westlink M7 to provide the business case to install a 50 kW system on the Eastern Creek Control Centre. The team from Energetics were then further engaged to assist with procurement and advisory services for the installation. Westlink greatly appreciated the high level of service and professionalism the team brought to the task. Their commitment and consistent service made the experience very easy for us and we would not hesitate to work again with Energetics.” – Daniel Lovett, Safety, Environment and Stakeholder Manager, NorthWestern Roads

Outcome

The results of Energetics’ measurement and verification activities showed that the system’s output and performance exceeded the generation expectations as set out in the initial business case.
