Coal Mining Abatement Technology Support Package (CMATSP)

13 Jul 2012Archived News Climate Change Matters

The Government is providing $70 million over five years commencing 1 July 2012 to support greenhouse emissions’ abatement projects for coal mining.

Integrating these additional funds into your capital planning can boost the business case for projects that reduce your emissions’ profile and your cost exposure over the longer term due to the carbon price scheme.

Background

The Government has developed a transitional assistance package for the Australian coal industry to minimise the impact of carbon price.

Funding is directed at three key areas:

  • R&D for technologies and processes
  • Safety and regulatory issues and
  • Development and feasibility studies of abatement strategies for the small and medium sized coal sector.

Key dates

For the R&D and safety and regulatory elements, the application and assessment process is undertaken in two phases:

Small and medium sized mine participants will be invited to register with the Department by 30 December 2012 and assistance arrangements will commence in March 2013.

Research and development objectives

The R&D element is aimed at developing technologies and processes that provide future solutions to safely reduce fugitive emissions.

Assistance in the range of $50,000 (for research projects) to $10 million (for demonstration projects) is available for the following key activities:

Solutions

Abatement solutions that coal miners should consider to fully utilise the program includes:

  • VAM measurement methods, design and practices,
  •  Coal seam pre-drainage and goaf drainage,
  • Open cut measurement methods,
  • Open cut drainage.
