Australian companies are finding it increasingly challenging to remain internationally competitive. The high Australian dollar is limiting export opportunities, domestic energy costs are rapidly increasing, and changes to taxation (including a price on carbon) are forcing Australian business to scrutinise bottom line performance.

Manufacturing

Many manufacturing groups have conducted energy assessments under the Energy Efficiency Opportunities program, identifying significant opportunities for cost reduction through the implementation of energy efficiency projects. The manufacturing industry has been identified under the Clean Energy Future as a sector requiring funding support to help implement energy/carbon reduction projects. The Clean Energy Funding program for manufacturing will be opened mid March in 2012.

Food processing

The food and beverage sector is experiencing supply chain pressures from major retailers who are requesting cheaper products. There are limited opportunities to pass on increasing energy and carbon costs in this highly competitive market place. Most food and beverage businesses have already applied continuous improvement and waste management processes such as lean manufacturing to help reduce cost of manufacture, however, there is still significant opportunity for improving energy efficiency and reducing production costs. The Clean Energy Fund will include specific allocations of funds for the Food and Beverage Industry and Metals industry groups.
