Mercury Energy business customers will now have the benefit of a new web-based energy management tool that will help them save money on energy costs.

Energy Challenger is an easy-to-use online analysis tool that assesses a business's energy management and identifies ways to reduce costs.

Energy Challenger will be available on the Mercury Energy website at http://www.mercury.co.nz/challenger from today and is a joint initiative between Mercury Energy and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

Mark Carter, Mercury Energy's General Manager Business Markets, says Mercury Energy is committed to taking proactive steps to assist businesses in saving energy and reducing costs. "Energy is often considered an overhead, rather than a variable cost that can be controlled," he says. "We've introduced Energy Challenger to give businesses the tools they need to successfully manage their energy use, in doing so many businesses could save between 10 and 30% on their energy costs."

Energy Challenger uses an online questionnaire to produce a report identifying energy management strengths and weaknesses and a list of critical actions to take. It also benchmarks businesses against those similar in size and industry and provides a simple short-term action plan to address top priority areas.

The new tool has been designed in conjunction with EECA to assist businesses who spend between $50,000 and $500,000 on electricity each year, however, those spending more than this may also find the tool beneficial.

The application was developed by energy consultants Energetics, an international company that has created other energy management products for EECA, including Energy Achiever and One-2-Five Energy, to use with New Zealand businesses.
