Could your business achieve greater energy cost savings?

In recent work with clients focussed on delivering considerable energy cost savings, Energetics' procurement team considered a number of key learnings in strategic energy procurement.

In our December 2008 newsletter, Energetics identified three main opportunities to help procurement managers lower energy costs. These were:

1. Optimising existing contracts
2. Implementing a detailed bill checking process
3. Forward planning for sourcing beyond 2009.

By working with a number of clients over the past few months and following these three strategies, Energetics has been able to capture savings worth over $8.3 million. This was realised from a range of projects covering: WA, Tasmania, NSW, SA and Qld, and spanning a number of different industry sectors.

The learnings from our recent work are:
• Even the most well managed contracts have some savings opportunities.
• Detailed bill checking is vital given the level of complexity and potential for errors.
• By forward planning and having tender processes in place, customers are able to lock in prices that provide savings of between 5 and 10% of prices seen in 2007/08.
