A customised, verified means to manage all your energy and greenhouse reporting requirements

Reporting energy and greenhouse data to a range of mandatory and voluntary programs can be time consuming and costly, producing inconsistent results as the data collection task is repeated for each new report.  Yet businesses are becoming increasingly cost and resource constrained, creating a greater urgency to identify efficiencies that also support accurate, consistent reports.

The pressure we see is particularly for businesses where one person is responsible for the production of multiple reports for mandatory and voluntary reporting schemes.  Usually greenhouse and energy reporting will be a secondary or minor concern, an “add on” to that person’s main role.  They have been left to determine reporting requirements and interpret regulations and estimation methodologies on their own with little or no oversight or support. However, in most (if not all) schemes responsibility for compliance and sign-off of reports rests with the CEO or other senior executive.

Problems we have seen with regard to greenhouse, energy and environmental reporting include:

  • inconsistent data sets where different methods have been developed in-house for collecting and collating data for various reporting requirements
  • simple typographical errors or unit errors (such as confusing litres and kilolitres) that would have been picked up by a review by a person familiar with the scheme in question
  • emission factors not updated in line with amended rules or legislation
  • significant errors regarding interpretation of facility boundaries, application of calculation methodologies or omission of energy or emission sources

Centrally managing data enables savings in time, reduced costs and greater consistency in results. We know that working with a single data set to address multiple reporting requirements saves duplication of effort, makes record keeping much simpler and provides consistent reporting values. Calculations should be put together by someone who truly understands the methodologies as well as the site-specific processes involved and these should be reviewed by at least one other “pair of eyes”.

Customised solution

We understand the similarities and differences between facilities and businesses within your industry and how that impacts reporting requirements. Energetics will develop a solution that captures and processes data for reporting across a range of mandatory and voluntary programs, and for internal use.  The customised spreadsheet does the following:

  • stores all sustainability data
  • performs calculations in line with program requirements
  • summarises results in a format suitable for online reporting.

Input sheets can be formatted so that transfer of data from existing systems’ reports (PULSE, SAP, etc.) will be as seamless as possible. The spreadsheet can be adapted to suit any combination of NGER, NPI, EEO, CDP, GRI and other sustainability reporting requirements.  Our internal quality assurance process will give you comfort that calculations and the application of legislation or regulations is accurate and appropriate.
