Energetics’ approach

In June 2008, Energetics became one of Australia's first consulting firms to achieve carbon neutrality through the Australian Government’s former Greenhouse Friendly Program.  Energetics developed a rigorous and comprehensive carbon footprint calculation based on a life cycle analysis (LCA) of our entire business. The diagram on the following page outlines the LCA inclusions. In addition to implementing energy efficient practices, Energetics continues to offset 100% of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the complete lifecycle of our services.

The total number of tonnes to be offset through procuring carbon credits in 2008 for offices in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney was 655 tonnes CO2-e.

Commitment to energy efficiency

Energetics continuously implements initiates to improve energy efficiency within our business. These include:

  • Three of our offices run on 100% Greenpower as part of our tenancy rating process
  •  A dedicated group of passionate individuals (eTeam) represent the broader Energetics' family in developing and implementing sustainable best practice within our operations. This team peruses initiatives such as:
    • waste minimisation
    • water savings
    • computer energy monitoring
  • Office refurbishments: In 2011, we relocated and/or refurbished three offices to improve our energy efficiency ratings. Environmental products are represented from floor to ceiling, including:
    • Ultima Computer Recessed Focus T5 lighting and microwave detectors. In Sydney installation of this technology has had the effect of reducing the energy intensity of lights by approximately 70%
    • Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) approved office equipment
    • energy efficient appliances
    • energy efficient appliances

Energetics tips for accurate carbon footprinting

  • Whenever possible (in other words when it is cost effective) use the broadest possible boundary definition as this is most defensible in the public domain
  • Use worst case information as it is readily defensible when exposed to scrutiny
  • When conducting a LCA, and determining the scope of the analysis, develop an understanding of the magnitude of the emissions that  you  eliminate from your assessment;
  • Consider an accredited carbon neutral program
  • Remember that the quality of the credits needs to match you and your company. Be sure that the credits you purchase are verified, transparent and easy to communicate to consumers and other stakeholders
